about

Davey’s music is Celtic, psychedelic, Pagan, life-affirming and provocative. He weaves strong melodies and striking lyrics around complex rhythms. Last year, Fantasy Forest Festival billed him as ‘The Master of Celtic rock’n’reel’ and have booked him to open the main stage this year!). His live shows fizz with energy and he truly connects with the audience.

Once upon a time, Davey Dodds was the front man for the quintessentially English prog-rock band Red Jasper. After topping the bill at The European Symphonic Rock Festival at The Noorderligt in Tilburg (Holland) in1994, Davey ‘retired’ and went to live on a different planet. He spent many years working as a fly-fishing guide in remote, wilderness locations and never envisaged returning to playing music.

Events and people persuaded him otherwise. His songs were being recorded by top performers – The Unthanks covered his classic ‘The Magpie’ which was used on The Detectorists on BBC2, was played at The Proms in 2018 and was even covered by Dave Gilmour last year! His solo album, ‘Kernowcopia’ was released by Angel Air Records in 2017 and showed that his songwriting was as strong as ever. The comeback gig at The Fleece in Bristol in July proved that he was still the master showman and story teller.

Davey’s current album, ‘Toadstool Soup’ was released last March. Rave reviews and a hectic schedule of gigs and festivals meant that Davey was looking forward to a hugely successful 2020. He was on tour in Europe with Pendragon when the corona chaos erupted and everything unravelled. Davey was relieved to catch the last flight out of Poland before the borders were shut.

Rather than sink into a pit of frustration and be depressed about what he couldn’t do in 2020, Davey decided to be positive and concentrate on what he could achieve. He pulled forward an ambitious recording project. ‘The Rite of Spring’ is a seriously pretentious concept piece! A Beltane celebration, it’s structured as a Druid ritual. A veritable constellation of other great musicians have joined Davey to produce a fabulous, ground breaking meisterwerk. There are great gigs booked to promote the new album and Davey hopes to bring his high-octane Celtic sounds to lots of festivals throughout the summer – let’s hope that the corona crisis abates!

On stage, Davey is joined by a band of top musicians. Playing great music with real live humans to real live humans is what Davey Dodds does best! Here are a couple of links to YouTube videos filmed at the gig at The 1865 in Southampton on the 1st of October 2020 (socially distanced of course!)
